Some days explain better than others why the 3Tre is much more than just a ski race. That was the case of yesterday, Tuesday, January 6th, as the the build-up to the 72nd edition scheduled for today (1st run at 6:00 pm, 2nd run at 9:00 pm,) transformed - as usual - into a grand gathering for the world of Italian and international skiing, which feels at home in Madonna di Campiglio like in few other places.
Ahead of tonight's challenge on January 7 on the Canalone Miramonti, the top performers of today’s slalom discipline paraded through Piazza Sissi for the bib draw, while champions of the past - more or less recent - gathered at Rifugio Chalet Spinale for the exclusive Champions Dinner.
Many guests of honour attended this anniversary edition. Thirty years have passed since Alberto Tomba's last triumph in Madonna di Campiglio and twenty since the last Italian victory by Giorgio Rocca. In the season leading up to the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympics, another Italian couldn't be absent alongside them: Giuliano Razzoli, Italy's last Olympic slalom champion.
Two other protagonists of Italian skiing were also there to reconnect the threads of memory: Paolo De Chiesa and Kristian Ghedina. Both were featured yesterday afternoon at PalaCampiglio, presenting their respective books "Ho sfiorato il cielo" and "Ghedo, non ho fretta ma vado veloce".
The allure of the 3Tre and the Canalone Miramonti also attracted three legends who have written their names in the race's roll of honor: Marc Girardelli, Ivano Edalini, and Ole Kristian Furuseth. The iconic Maglia Fulmine was presented to the Norwegian, winner of the December 18th, 1990 edition.
While Madonna di Campiglio embraced its champions of the past on Eve night, today it will be the turn of the new generation to light up the competition. The show of the 72nd 3Tre is ready to begin and write new pages in the event’s history.
