March 1953, Canazei – Marmolada
The fourth edition of the 3Tre attracts a relatively small field, with just 42 athletes taking part. Yet among them are some of the finest international skiers of the time, from Austrians Obereigner and Hinterseer to Swiss stars Rey and Schneider. It is the latter, racing in their distinctive red jerseys, who dominate the slalom events. In the opening giant slalom at Pecol di Canazei, René Rey takes victory ahead of Austria’s Ernst Obereigner. The following day, the Swiss skier triumphs again, this time ahead of his compatriot Schneider, a gold medallist at the Aspen World Championships. On the Marmolada, Carlo Gartner — remarkably left out of the Italian team selected for the 3Tre on the eve of the event — causes a major upset by winning the final giant slalom, held in place of the scheduled downhill.
