At last, after a five-year drought, an Italian skier returns to the top step of the podium at the 3Tre. Rising downhill star Bruno Alberti claims victory in what becomes known as the “controversial giant slalom.”
During the race, France’s Vuarnet — bronze medallist at the Bad Gastein World Championships — is allowed to start last, despite wearing bib number 3, giving him time to recover after the climb on foot to the starting gate.
France does not have to wait long for revenge. The following day, Duvillard dominates the slalom, finishing ahead of Austria’s Schaller. Determined to make it another victory in the downhill, Duvillard pushes to the limit but suffers a spectacular crash, flying more than 60 metres through the air. He is taken to hospital and requires around ten stitches to his head.
Switzerland’s Forrer takes the downhill victory, finishing well ahead of Bruno Alberti.
