A hugely promising young Swede bursts onto the World Cup scene — and into skiing history. In Madonna di Campiglio, he claims the first World Cup victory of an extraordinary career that would ultimately bring him a record 86 wins, as well as two Olympic gold medals, five World Championship titles and three overall World Cup crowns. His name is Ingemar Stenmark.
In the opening slalom, the first of the season, the young Swede — still a few days short of his 18th birthday — triumphs ahead of Italy’s Paolo De Chiesa and Fausto Radici.
In the giant slalom, which for the first time features the finish on the Patascoss plateau, Piero Gros is once again victorious, finishing ahead of Greg Jones of the USA and Tino Pietrogiovanna of Italy.
