13 December 1978, Madonna di Campiglio (world cup)
The demands of the World Cup calendar once again reduce the 3Tre to a single day of racing, centred around the slalom on the Miramonti.
The Madonna di Campiglio slalom is the first of the World Cup season. A particularly tricky course set by Italian coach Arigoni catches Stenmark off guard, forcing him out along with no fewer than 49 other competitors. Switzerland takes full advantage, with Martial Donnet and Peter Lüscher claiming the top two places.
The following day, in the non-World Cup parallel slalom, the Swedish champion bounces back, taking victory ahead of Mauro Bernardi.
