A new era begins, both for Madonna di Campiglio and for world skiing. In December 1987, a “bomb” — in the best possible sense — explodes onto the skiing scene.
It marks the beginning of the era of one of Italy’s greatest champions: Alberto Tomba. Starting with bib number 24, Tomba claims his first 3Tre victory in Madonna di Campiglio, finishing ahead of Austria’s Rudolf Nierlich.
It is the beginning of an extraordinary career that will last until 1998 and bring “Tomba la Bomba” 50 World Cup victories — three of them in Madonna di Campiglio — as well as three Olympic gold medals, two World Championship titles and the overall World Cup crown in 1995.
