1998 - The First Night Race

December 1998, Madonna di Campiglio

The 50th edition of the 3Tre takes place outside its natural home, the World Cup circuit. But the organisers in Trentino refuse to be discouraged. Following a major change at the top of the Organising Committee, Lorenzo Conci — son of founder Fabio and a skilled diplomat — takes the helm, as Madonna di Campiglio sets out with renewed confidence and the ambition of soon returning to skiing’s most prestigious circuit.

The slalom is organised in partnership with La Gazzetta dello Sport and is once again won by Jure Košir, who battles his way down the Miramonti with the same determination he had shown there in World Cup competition.

For the first time, a young Italian by the name of Giorgio Rocca steps onto the 3Tre podium — an achievement he will repeat several times in the years to come. Austria’s Mario Reiter finishes third.

The race also takes place in a completely new setting: for the first time, the athletes compete under the lights. The newly installed floodlighting system on the Canalone Miramonti makes its official debut for the 3Tre’s 50th anniversary edition, opening a new chapter in the event’s history.
