The 3Tre’s absence from the FIS World Cup calendar proves short-lived. In December 1999, Madonna di Campiglio returns to the elite of the international circuit — and marking its comeback is a familiar face on the Miramonti: Norway’s Finn Christian Jagge.
Jagge claims victory ahead of Austria’s Benjamin Raich and Thomas Stangassinger, bringing his special relationship with Madonna di Campiglio full circle: the Miramonti is where he had claimed his first World Cup victory in 1991, and now, eight years later, it is also where he celebrates the last of his career.
At its subsequent spring conference in Portorož, the International Ski Federation introduces a new arrangement: Italy will host only one men’s World Cup slalom, alternating each year between Madonna di Campiglio and Sestriere.
