2000 - The New Millennium Begins

19 December 2000, Madonna di Campiglio (World Cup)

In theory, Madonna di Campiglio was supposed to take a break from hosting its most prestigious event in December 2000.

In practice, things turn out differently. The FIS selects the resort to host a race cancelled in Slovenia, allowing the 52nd edition of the 3Tre — combined with the giant slalom in Alta Badia — to go ahead as usual.

It is an Austrian triumph. Mario Matt dominates the race, leading an impressive clean sweep of the podium ahead of compatriots Heinz Schilchegger and Rainer Schönfelder.

For Matt, one of the finest slalom specialists of the modern era, 2000 marks the beginning of a long and remarkable career that will bring him three World Championship gold medals, Olympic gold at Sochi 2014 and 15 World Cup victories. It is a difficult night for the Italian team, with Matteo Nana the highest-placed Italian in 20th.

This is also a special winter for Madonna di Campiglio, which hosts the Snowboard World Championships on the 5 Laghi slope just a few weeks after the Miramonti slalom.
