The 3Tre never fails to deliver drama. Clément Noël looks certain to win and become the first Frenchman to triumph in Madonna di Campiglio in almost thirty years, since Patrice Bianchi in 1992. But then comes an extraordinary twist: carrying a lead of more than a second, the Frenchman makes a mistake at the very last gate and throws away a victory that seemed already his.
The man celebrating on Wednesday, 22 December 2021 is Sebastian Foss-Solevåg, putting another Norwegian on the top step of the 3Tre podium. His compatriot Henrik Kristoffersen, meanwhile, straddles a gate while producing what looked set to be another memorable second run on the Trentino slope.
France still earns a place on the podium through Alexis Pinturault in second, with Sweden’s Kristoffer Jakobsen finishing third.
It is also a memorable night for the Italian team — and not only because spectators finally return to the Canalone Miramonti, filling all 3,500 available places for the World Cup night slalom. Three Italians finish inside the top ten, something not seen for some time: an increasingly impressive Alex Vinatzer takes fourth, watching in disbelief as Noël suffers the same fate that had befallen him two weeks earlier in Val d’Isère. The evergreen Giuliano Razzoli finishes seventh, with Simon Maurberger tenth.
