Madonna di Campiglio looked set to become a Norwegian paradise once again, but in the end it was the Swiss flag flying over the 69th edition of the 3Tre, as Daniel Yule added another chapter to his remarkable relationship with the Canalone Miramonti.
The Swiss slalom specialist claimed his third World Cup victory in Madonna di Campiglio — out of five career wins at the time — on the slope where he had developed a habit of triumphing every other edition: first in 2018, then in 2020 and now again in 2022. With three 3Tre victories, Yule drew level with Alberto Tomba and Henrik Kristoffersen, who finished second on this occasion, while remaining two wins behind the legendary Ingemar Stenmark.
Once again, Campiglio delivered a night to remember. A commanding second run from Yule turned the race on its head, pushing rising Norwegian star Lucas Braathen down to fourth after he had set the fastest time in the opening run. Already a two-time World Cup winner that season — in the Val d’Isère slalom and the Alta Badia giant slalom — the 22-year-old had been chasing Norway’s fifth victory in Madonna di Campiglio in eight editions, following Kristoffersen’s three triumphs and Foss-Solevåg’s win in 2021.
Germany’s Linus Straßer completed the podium in third, while the 3Tre once again enjoyed a spectacular turnout, with 12,000 spectators lining the course.
There was less to celebrate for the Italian team. Returning from injury, Alex Vinatzer straddled a gate in the first run. Tommaso Sala was the best of the Italians in 13th despite suffering a back compression during his opening run, while Giuliano Razzoli finished 18th.
