2024-2025 - Popov Pulls Off the Upset

8 January 2025, Madonna di Campiglio (World Cup)

Throughout its 71 editions, the 3Tre has proved time and again that it knows how to surprise and create extraordinary stories. Just as it did fifty years earlier, when the Canalone Miramonti helped launch the legend of Ingemar Stenmark — a special guest in Madonna di Campiglio that evening — on Wednesday, 8 January, the 3Tre once again celebrated a first-ever World Cup victory.

In a slalom discipline increasingly without a dominant force, it was Albert Popov who emerged from the unpredictability of the Canalone Miramonti. The 27-year-old Bulgarian claimed an emotional and unexpected first World Cup victory of his career in Trentino.

It was also a historic triumph for his country: Popov became the first Bulgarian to win a World Cup race since Petar Popangelov’s slalom victory in Lenggries, Germany, in 1980.
