Mountains represent far more than natural stages for alpine skiing events - they are fragile ecosystems requiring preservation for future generations. Alpine skiing can transcend racing against the clock to become a testing ground for innovative approaches to reducing environmental impact, embracing shared responsibility for planetary protection.

This vision drives both the 3Tre Committee, organizing the January 8 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup Night Slalom in Madonna di Campiglio, and the International Ski Federation (FIS) in their pursuit of environmental sustainability and CO2 emission reduction.

FIS has equipped World Cup organizers with comprehensive resources, including webinars, training sessions, and emissions calculation tools. Launched in October 2024, the FIS CO2 Calculator helps organizers measure event-generated emissions, enabling data-driven environmental decisions.

Built on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the calculator tracks emissions across key sectors including energy consumption, mobility, facilities, and logistics. Its distinctive feature allows use during both planning and reporting phases, enabling organizers to compare options and identify optimal emission reduction strategies.

"FIS has established a dedicated Sustainability Division with board-level representation," explains newly appointed Sustainability Director Susanna Sieff. "This streamlines our efforts across all fronts. We aim to maximize sustainability in FIS operations while providing concrete tools for event organizers and National Federations. The CO2 calculator, now used by 3Tre, represents our first step, with additional tools launching in 2025."

"Ski competitions can deliver both sporting and cultural experiences," Sieff continues. "Audiences and athletes increasingly demand environmentally conscious events. The process begins with awareness - evaluating supply chains, material choices, identifying rental opportunities, and promoting local, sustainable purchasing. Transportation, our primary impact source, favors public and collective options. Renewable energy adoption and reduced generator use also create significant benefits."

Following FIS's lead, 3Tre appointed Iris Mosca as Sustainability Manager. "As a major international sporting event, 3Tre inevitably impacts its surroundings - environmentally, socially, and economically," Mosca notes. "Working with FIS and utilizing their specialized alpine event calculator marks significant progress. Precise data helps identify emission reduction opportunities and enables effective impact offsetting through sustainable measures."

The 71st 3Tre opens Tuesday, January 7, with the 18:00 public bib draw in Sissi Square, preceded by the "Valanga Azzurra" documentary celebrating Italy's legendary 1970s team. Special guest Ingemar Stenmark returns to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his first Madonna di Campiglio and World Cup triumph. The World Cup Night Race follows January 8, with runs at 17:45 and 20:45 CET.
