Already in the 1930s, when skiing was beginning to develop into a mass phenomenon, Madonna di Campiglio was facing an important challenge: designing a comprehensive network of ski slopes descending directly into the town centre, along the hillsides surrounding the village basin.
By then, the resort had already successfully established itself as a venue for major winter sporting events, hosting Italian and regional championships as well as the Littoriali della Neve e del Ghiaccio competitions. It therefore became necessary to adapt the local skiing infrastructure to the latest requirements, both from a tourism and a sporting perspective.
A solution was identified by a special commission established in 1939, which included several members of the local ski school, led by Bruno Detassis. Among the plans submitted to the Municipality of Pinzolo was the route of a new competition slope, originally conceived for the Littoriali: the Canalone Miramonti was born.
