3Tre and Madonna di Campiglio celebrate history and future with Kandahar Ski Club in London

The 3Tre represents more than a ski race—it embodies skiing heritage. This year's 3Tre on Tour made a significant London stop, celebrating a profound historical connection: 114 years ago, British skiers from Switzerland introduced alpine skiing to Madonna di Campiglio, at a time when the Kandahar Ski Club—one of the world's oldest—played an instrumental role in the sport's global development.

On Friday, November 29, five weeks before the FIS Alpine Night Slalom scheduled for January 8, 2025, London's Oriental Club near Bond Street welcomed 3Tre and Madonna di Campiglio Tourism Board representatives. The event strengthens ties with the Kandahar Ski Club while engaging British skiing enthusiasts. This enduring UK connection gained fresh momentum with Dave Ryding's impressive third-place finish in last season's Night Slalom, while another representative of the Kandahar – an international ski club whose main site is in Mürren, Switzerland – is Daniel Yule, whose three wins on the Canalone Miramonti stand to show his special feeling with Madonna.

The Kandahar Ski Club's combined race format inspired 3Tre's founders in 1950, who added giant slalom to downhill and slalom to create the "3Tre" (three racing days in Trentino). By 1957, the event found its permanent home in Madonna di Campiglio, establishing itself as a cornerstone of alpine skiing history: in 1967, 3Tre was one of the five current stages to feature in the original World Cup calendar.

Since its 1950 debut, the event has evolved into a winter tradition, drawing crowds to the Canalone Miramonti stadium and millions of television viewers worldwide. 3Tre and Madonna di Campiglio have become synonymous, blending glamour with sporting passion. The upcoming edition promises two thrilling runs on January 8th at 5:45 and 8:45 PM CET

The special event in London had a full house, with representatives from the ski club, GB Snowsports, media and stakeholders showing up at the exclusive Oriental Club venue. Slalom specialist Billy Major of the GB Ski Team was also a special guest of the night, introduced by William Lunn, the President of the Kandahar Ski Club and the grandson of original founder, Arnold Lunn, and interviewed by Vicky Gosling of GB Snowsport.

In addition to 3Tre President Lorenzo Conci, Madonna di Campiglio Tourist Board President, Tullio Serafini, and Director, Matteo Bonapace, and Funivie Campiglio Director Bruno Felicetti led the audience through the beauty and uniqueness of Madonna di Campiglio and its winter season, that officially got off last weekend with the opening of the first slopes in the Grosté area, followed by the Spinale area from November 30th.

CELEBRATING LEGENDS FROM PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE

Madonna di Campiglio's ski areas opened on November 23 following substantial snowfall in the Brenta Dolomites.

The 71st edition commemorates significant milestones, including the 50th anniversary of legend Ingemar Stenmark's inaugural World Cup victory in 1974 – 85 more would follow. This season’s competition features notable returns: two-time Madonna winner Marcel Hirscher, now representing the Netherlands, and Brazilian-Norwegian sensation Lucas Braathen. Italian hopes rest on Alex Vinatzer to end a 20-year drought since Giorgio Rocca's 2005 victory.

The field includes past champions Henrik Kristoffersen and Daniel Yule, tied with Alberto Tomba with three successes each, only pursuing Ingemar Stenmark’s five, alongside contenders Clément Noël, Manuel Feller, Atle Lie McGrath, and of course Brit Dave Ryding, whose third place in 2023 marked Great Britain’s first podium on the iconic Canalone Miramonti slope.

CONCI: "A MAGIC CONNECTION"
3Tre President Lorenzo Conci was emotional after an intense and unique event in London. “You could really feel the passion and the magic in the house. We are grateful to all those old and new friends, starting with Kandahar Ski Club, Oriental Club and GB Snowsport, who helped us to bring our history and reality to here, and even more importantly, created the opportunity to discover so many connections between 3Tre and Kandahar, Madonna di Campiglio and Great Britain.”

“We can tell, there’s so much potential for both the event and the venue, and the great contacts and opportunities we have just started to nurture are just the beginning of what’s going to follow. There’s no overstating also the importance of joining forces with Madonna di Campiglio Tourist Board, Funivie Campiglio and Trentino Marketing to present our area and offer to the highest level in key contexts like this, and we feel extremely confident that this shared commitment will produce even greater results in the future.”

BEYOND THE RACE: A FESTIVAL FOR SKI AND SPORTS LOVERS
Festivities begin Tuesday, January 7, with the traditional public bib draw in Sissi Square, launching two days of celebration. The iconic Canalone Miramonti slope will welcome over 10,000 spectators, creating an electric atmosphere for this prestigious night slalom.

Tickets are available at www.3trecampiglio.it for this unique opportunity to experience 3Tre's magic and celebrate the new year in one of Italy's premier winter destinations. With six weeks remaining, anticipation builds for this globally celebrated night slalom event.
