Vinatzer eyes redemption on home soil in Madonna

The 3Tre Madonna di Campiglio Night Slalom holds special significance for Alex Vinatzer. The Canalone Miramonti delivered one of his two World Cup podiums when he claimed third behind Norwegians Henrik Kristoffersen and Sebastian Foss-Solevaag in December 2020.

That podium came during pandemic restrictions, without the legendary 3Tre atmosphere. January 8's edition promises a stark contrast, as the Canalone Miramonti welcomes back its passionate crowd - hoping to witness the first Italian victory since Giorgio Rocca's magical 2005/2006 season. Vinatzer aims to end both that 20-year drought and his personal slalom struggles when the action begins at 17:45 and 20:45 CET.

"Training's clicking now," reports Vinatzer, fresh from sessions on Bormio's Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic track. "The shin issues that held me back are finally resolved. I'm regaining my edge and the mindset needed for January's crucial slalom series."

The calendar stacks classic challenges - Madonna di Campiglio leads into Adelboden, Wengen, Kitzbühel, and Schladming. Starting strong proves crucial. "My best slalom finish this season is tenth, but I can’t be happy with that. Madonna offers the perfect reset. While giant slalom's gone better - fifth in Sölden and eighth in Alta Badia - I've struggled between rapid gates."

"Recent training shows I've found my form and stability again. The Canalone Miramonti must be my turning point. The podium feels within reach - I'm more confident in slalom than giant slalom, despite results suggesting otherwise," Vinatzer explains.

The 26-year-old Italian’s 3Tre history - including fourth in 2021 - suggests breakthrough potential. "This technical track suits my style perfectly. The preparation is always impeccable. Racing at home, with such passionate support for our team, adds something special."

The 71st 3Tre opens Tuesday, January 7, with Pala Campiglio hosting the "Valanga Azzurra" documentary at 16:00, celebrating Italy's legendary 1970s team. The 18:30 public bib draw in Sissi Square features special guests including Ingemar Stenmark - marking 50 years since his first World Cup victory - plus Marc Girardelli and Italian icons Piero Gros, Paolo De Chiesa, Alberto Tomba, and Giuliano Razzoli.

World Cup Night Race action follows January 8, with runs at 17:45 and 20:45 CET. Tickets available at www.3trecampiglio.it.
